Txarly Brown is a graphic designer, deejay, club promoter, collector, activist and since September 2007, also presenter of Achilifunk Radio Show, his weekly rumba news show on Gladys Palmera.
He entered the music scene in the nineties as part of the Novophonic posse with Makala when he used to live in Donostia (Spain),and later with the electronica easy listening combo The Nairobi Trio under the label Business Class. Then he moved to Barcelona where his passion for the “rumba catalana” has made him a sort of modern ambassador for the genre. He coordinates the Catalonian Rumba Association FORCAT,collaborates and runs the weekly Rumba Club sessions at Sala Apolo 2 (Barcelona), as well as travelling around Europe on a fortnightly basis playing modern rumba, which he calls Achilifunk.
Back in 2007 he launched the Achilifunk Compilation “Gypsy Soul 1969-1979″ a great selection of classics. Two years later was up to “Más Achilifunk”,a refreshed edition pairing the best rumba combos from Barcelona with international remixers. Now is the time for the third and last chapter of Achilifunk: “Gitano Real”,out next April on Lovemonk Records.
“A musical evolution, an attempt to create a new rumba scene with what the predecessors have already accomplished. On this CD, the best musicians from this new scene have come together to form a unique band. On one side we have the gypsy faction, the “Achilis”: Sam (Papawa), Muchacho (La Troba Kung-Fú), Rambo (Sabor de Gràcia) and Jack (Rumbamazigha), all of whom have excellent pedigree. On the other side, you’ll find the great Hammond groove of Paco Manzanares (Mantecao y su Combo) and the super juicy guitar funk of Lalo Lopez (Fundación Tony Manero, Chocadelia, etc). And this combo, called Banda Achilifunk, is joined by the Original Jazz Orquestra Taller de Mùsics, a.k.a. OJO; Twelve academics with an outstanding reputation, captained by Vicens Martín.”
